anyone herd of the Tafleberg morph? I'm wondering if my "cobalt" is actually Tafelberg

AdamSanity Jan 10, 2004 01:07 AM

I've been wondering If my tinc. is actually a cobalt. I've been looking at pictures of all the different morphs I can find and it doesnt seem to be totaly similar to a cobalt or even a suriname cobalt. According to www.tropical-expecience.nl the range of the tafleburg and the suriname cobalt may overlap. anyway I wanted to see what others might think. I wanted to breed but now I dont know if i'll be able to get a pair.

My guess is you bought it as a cobalt, so its a cobalt. The Tafleberg are sort of new, so I wouldn't think it would have been labeled that is it wasn't. Ask the breeder you got it from. Almost every breeder will know the history behind their frogs. Now if you got it from a big pet supplier or pet store, I would say don't breed it, but I am a purest and like clean dart frog lines.

Good luck, I know this didn't help a lot,

Appears to be a cobalt to me. I can see where it could be confusing if your comparing to the pics on Marcus' site. None of the Tafelburgs that I've ever seen look like the ones on Marcus' site. Usually they have a much reduced pattern similiar to Alanis or Infer Alanis (which are from localities very nearby). Just my opinion, if you want a real expert opinion on Tafelburgs email Chuck Powell. He has kept them for quite a while.

Cobalt's generally refer to the coastal morph of tinctorius in Surinam and French Guyana. Tafelburg's are cobalts, but come from a specific site - Tafleburg Mountain (French Guyana, I think, but I'd have to check my references) - they tend ot be larger, and more of a cream color where your "typical" cobalts are yellow (although Tafleburg's have yellow over the eyes and on the nose). Tafelburg three points, are again from the area around Tafleburg, but have a reduced yellow/cream pattern which shows only small patches over the eyes and on the end of the nose. If I look back through my records I could probably find more detailed information, but that the jist of it.

Thanks for the input Chuck, I knew you'd have some input on the Tafelburgs. I guess I'm only familiar with the three points (reduced pattern).

well one of the main reasons I think it could be a tafleburg is because the lines going down the back are a very light blue the only place with yellow is over the eyes and nose.
