cane toad/rocco toad differences

paris Jan 10, 2004 03:50 AM

i have a toad i bought a few year back that was sold as a cane toad (its a male) i just the other day purchased a similar toad(a female) who is much bigger and looks almost the same but was sold at this store as a rocco toad. both have paratiod glands on the back legs-i have seen one web site stating that cane toads have this on their legs, and another stating that roccos have this istead as the easy to identify difference between the two. i know alot of bufo's look alike so i am wondering how i really can tell for sure what i have??

mDNA testing. =)

Don't suppose a species key exists anywhere for the marinus species group. I'll look and see if I can find something.

I have one of each. The Rococo is an adult female, but the Cane is still a juvie. The female of both species is always larger and much smoother to the touch than the male. What I can see myself with these two would be: The Cane has more pronounced webbed back feet than the Rococo. Also, the Rococo is mottled in her color where as the Cane is just a drab color of brown/olive green. These are just my opinion because I can only go by what I see while looking at the two so far. And I'm sure that there's variations as in most any animal. Now, I could probably write a book on their differences in personalities! Anyhow, I enjoy both of them.

As far as I know, Bufor marinus lacks these tibial glands and they can be used as a diagnostic marker for B. paracnemis.

one thing I have noticed between the two and I couple be miss led from the pics but I have noriced that in Rococco toads there heads seem to be narrower then marine toads. There heads are more sqaured off and the roccoco toads are pointer. I could be wrong because I have only seen pics of the rococco but I do own a marine
