Hardware cloth!!!

Im wondering if the 1/2inch hardware cloth is good for both Rats and mice in a rack system??

Not good for mice as hoppers can get throught the 1/2" and go exploring about your home.

1/4" is better for mice.

Can the mice eat through the 1/4 hardware cloth? I have some of that here at the house and it seems to small?Maybe im wrong
