I bought some blocks of that green fake plant mounting foam that you can find cheap at craft stores. It can be molded by hand pretty easily and then I stick fake plants into it put it in the terrarium and cover with substrate.

Does anyone know if this stuff is harmful to snakes?

I haven't notice any adverse effects yet.

I don't know for sure if its poisonous but, if you've ever used the stuff, you know it leaves green foam dust everywhere, and that probably wouldnt be good for the snake at all...plus if it crawls over the stuff, it will most likely get that stuff in the scales

To answer your question, the foam is harmless. We use it at one of the places I work at. We used blocks of the foam to hold clumps of dried grasses to help dress up the inside of several of our new vivariums. The end result was fantastic and we've had absolutely no problems. The foam after all is an inert material. If the animals was going to eat the foam it would be a different story. The only bit of advice I can offer is to bury the blocks in the substrate so the snakes won't be as likely to flip them over or otherwise damage them.
