Cherryhead Redfoots

Bilbo Jan 10, 2004 12:35 PM

hi,
I was wondering if anyone can tell me how the cherryhead redfoots got their cherryhead? Do people accomplish this through breeding or are some redfoots naturally like this in the wild. I was also wondering if they have any disadvantages/advantages from regular redfoots. If anyone knows of a good place to get them let me know! Thanks!!!

The so called cherryhead race of redfoots are a naturally occuring 'type'. Although they are not described as a seperate subspecies they clearly are.

The name cherryhead is unfortunate and is an artifact of dealer ignorance and hype. The reason it is a poor name is because many individuals of this race DO NOT have cherry red heads. Some have nice orange colored heads and a few others even yellow. Also, the amount of red varies greatly among individuals. Some have very little color on their heads and legs while others are strikingly marked. The cherryhead name came about years ago when some south Florida dealers started calling them that to differentiate them from other populations of redfoots and to qualify asking more money for them.
They are also called 'dwarf' redfoots which is another long story.
