Rats and breeding.

bodab Jan 10, 2004 02:05 PM

Hi,

Is it easy to breed rats?
How big are the babies? Are the babies small enough to feed a baby 15" corn?
Will they get big in 3 weeks?
What do you breed them in?
Is there any specific age you breed them at?

Thanks
Dom

We have been breeding ours for about a year now and they grow quick if fed well and yes you could definatly feed a corn with the babies. We just got some more dumbos and they are very cool looking or cute as my wife would say.........snowy in montana

Easier to breed than mice. As there is not the tight, unshiftable social groups.

Babies would be, IMHO, too big for a younger corn. If the corn is taking big fuzzy mice...then rat pups would work. Anything smaller and best to stick with mice for a while longer.

In three weeks they will be adult mouse size, 30 grams.

My rats have luxury 18X24X 18high wire cages. I spoil them, I have the room and cages. Others use tubs and can give you ideas.

I don't like to breed my rats before 10 weeks and aim for 12. They can breed earlier. I separate them until then.
