Which is better?

Bezzerra Jun 05, 2003 10:11 AM

I ran an ad in my local newspaper to find my snapping turtle a home. I had two different people call me this morning wanting him.

One has a pond with fish in it where he would be the only turtle. The other person also has a pond but has 4 other normal turtles already in it.

Which home sounds better? I live in Alabama so the weather is warm enough for them to stay outside probably year-round.

p.s. Thanks sk8r009 for offering to take him. I think these homes will be good for him.

I've had three other people call about Leon. One of them has a 100 gallon aquarium where he would have the whole thing to himself. The other two have 55 gallon aquariums.

Would a pond or an aquarium be better for him? Please help me choose!

Go for the pond with no other turtles. If the person does not live to far away from you I would personally go over there and check out the living conditions.

However, I just found out that she was getting it for her mother's pond and her mom said she didn't have the health to take care of a turtle.

I think I will go with the guy who has the 100 gallon tank.

I have a question: Are turtles like fish-the amount they grow depends on the size of their habitat? I know he will get big regardless but will his growth slow down if he is kept in an aquarium?

that is incorrect, it wioll keep growing no matter the size of the cage. if kept in a cage too small it will suffer being stressed and unhappy and mosty likely living in its own waste and live a short life

Kurma is right. They will continue to grow regardless of there tank size. A 100gal will not be big enough when the turtle reaches full size. So make sure you explain this to the adoptee. Also, make sure he knows his stuff, and knows what hes getting into. A snapper is not a beginner turtle.

I've seen a few that were huge but for the most part, I've only seen small ones.

Well average size is like 12-16in, but they can get up to 19-20in. They tend to get bigger in captivity since they get fed so much, so I bet he will get up into the bigger numbers.
