Lele...i have a lobster roach question

gutloader Jan 10, 2004 05:24 PM

tell me if i'm doing anything wrong

i have them in a 20 gallon tank with 2inches of peat moss in the bottom...i put several old paper towel rolls and one of those cardboard 4 coffee cup holders on top of the rolls...i have a flower pot turned on its side that i put their food in..i mist the tank three times a day and have a 40 watt spot lamp for heat....here's my problem...i haven't seen them eat since i got them..the food is untouched...i've been giving them dry dog food and a slice of apple or orange for moisture...also, they are never in the cardboard but under the cardboard in the dirt...is that normal??

I am not expert on the roaches, but I have kept them alive for a couple months!

They feed at night so unless you sneak in while it is dark you are unlikely to see much activity. As for where they spend their time mine too prefer to be under the feeding dish than in a roll. I did have some cardboard egg carton pieces and they seemed to like them. They are a social insect (like honybees, ants) so you will usually find them all together in one or two places.

I actaully use oatmeal for bedding, tho' I am sure peat mosss is OK.

I don't give them any additional heat. They are in my herp room/office which ranges b/t 60-75 degrees (day/night) I have them located at the edge of a table against a wall so they do get direct heat when it is on.

Are you keeping the light on constantly? If your room is warm enough, thus the tank, I wouldn't even use it, but if you need heat I would either turn it off at night, as they are less likely to feed, or use a ceramic heat emitter. I have one for my geckos and it's great (for the record I think reptiledepot.com has them cheapest).

Morgana and others may have other thoughts or tips but as I said - mine are very much alive! LOL!

my room temp. is usually in the 70's so maybe i'll just turn the light off...i thought they needed to be warmer than that...thanks for your help....oh yeah, i was having trouble feeding my jax out of a dish...not anymore..he couldn't resist the roaches now that he has a taste for them and nailed them when i held the dish in front of him...hooray!...they say it's the little things in life that make you happy...they're right

I think if you want to maintain a fast growing breeding colony warmth is need but frankly I'd prefer mine to slow down!

And yes, it is the little things

p.s. just posted a reply to your roachman link below..
