tank size?

indi Jan 10, 2004 06:08 PM

I have been to all the local shops, and the biggest size tank I have been able to find is 40gal (38x18x16) I _THINK_ those were the dimensions, I should have written them down. All the sites that I have read recommend a 55gal tank. Should I try to hunt around for a bigger tank, or will the 40gal work? I will be getting roughly a 3month old beardie. Thanks for the time!!

I think a 40gal would work for you for now, but you would be better off getting a 55gal now rather then upgrading down the road, saves some $.

Yea, I was thinking the same thing in terms of saving some money. I don't suppose you or anyone else know of a good website that sells tanks that are the recommended 4x2x2 in size?

the best way people will say is to build, that is my plan probably this summer. check for reptile shows near you, stores that sell fish/reptiles, check your classifieds. sometimes you can get lucky and find cheap "cracked" ones or just used and dirty.

not if you think of it height wise, but the 40 gallon has more floor space. The 55 gallon has 4 square feet, but a 40 breeder has 4 1/2 square feet.

Either can be used. If you have a very large beardie you would be better off with something larger, or at least the 40 breeder (because it can be hard for them to turn in the narrow tank). Right now I have a tank that's 36" long, 18" deep, and 25" tall for my beardie. The problem with tall tanks is that my beardie doesn't like basking up high all the time, so he usually doesn't get close enough to the UV bulbs. I supplement his food, and a lot of breeders raise beautiful beardeds without any UVB lighting, but I would like it if he got closer to it.

So if you get a 40 gallon, a 55 would be a pointless upgrade (unless the beardie likes to climb and is 18" or less in length).

well doing some more researce I found a aquarium shop that can order me a 48x24x24, and he said it is a 120gal tank for $250. That number kind of shocked me. So before I have them order it for me, I just want to make sure that this will be a good size tank. I am still debating on making one from scratch, if anyone has some good links to a do it yourself tank that would be great. I just remember my friends dad has a really nice wood shop that I way have access to. I am assuming plywood is the best wood for this project?

Don't have a "tank" plan, but I do have some cage building plans on my site. It can be modified and you can use plexi glass instead of wire or screening in some areas.

Definitly get the bigger tank. I had mine in a 20L (when he was only about 4" long). He grew out of it pretty quick (about 6 months). I would say to just start off with the 55 if you are getting one that age. Your local pet store should have information on a 55. You could try to build one (I like the looks of the aquariums and am not very handy).

Good luck.

This one gives plans to actually build one.

This one is mine and just shows how to create fake rocks n such. No actual cage plans.

If your getting a regular cage, id go with a 40 breeder over a 55gallon.
