Help me with my gold skinks!

kremlinator Jan 10, 2004 07:18 PM

Okay, I have 2 gold skinks. A female that had babies in the pet store a while before I bought her, and a male who's nice to hold. The male eats sort of randomly (not enough I don't think), and the female hogs down anything in sight. The male also never comes out of his hiding place to bask. what's the deal with this, and can I do anything about it!?? I split them up for feeding, by the way.

ALSO: I think my gold skink may be pregnant. I've heard this species is very prolific and is easy to breed. I can't feel eggs, but the female is MUCH fatter (and more active) than the male. She can't be fat as I only feed her 2 crickets every 2 days and if she is...that's messed up. Anyways, I need to know a few things:
1.Does this species give live births or lay eggs?
2.Gestation period
3.Do I need to take male away when/if babies are born?
4.What places do they lay their eggs in (material or whatever)?
5.How can I tell if she is going to have babies?
6.How many babies should I expect?
7.Don't forget about the male feeding problem!!!

Thanks!!!!!!

So I called the local pet store. Theres a guy there who raised to babies my female had while she was still there. Basically there is a 50 day gestation period, live births, the male doesn't care about the babies so he won't eat them, there will be around 8 babies.

I am planning on keeping one if she is indeed pregnant, and putting that baby (when It's older) in with a fire skink and a berber skink. Can I mix species like that or will there be a problem??
