More tanks

Arklier Jan 10, 2004 08:57 PM

Whenever I go into a pet store, I always check out the tanks to look over what they have with an eye towards herps. My parents and friends think I have an aquarium fetish. I have at least half a dozen in storage, (economic situations dictated that I had to move back in with my parents for awhile) waiting for when I move out.

Well, today I had to go pick up some crickets for my other animals, and of course checked the tanks while I was at Petco. I saw a *HUGE* aquarium. A 180G All-Glass tank with oak hood and stand for $1100, 72" x 24" x 24" going off All-Glass's web site. And yes, I was sorely tempted, and no, I didn't buy (no room). They didn't have any crickets, so I went over to PetSmart.

They had a bunch of beautiful, furniture quality trim Oceanic 30g cube aquarium that I could just imagine frogs hopping around in. In my opinion, the drawback with working with aquariums is that they usually lack depth. A 55g tank will only be about 12" deep. This makes it a real pain to arrange wood and plants, for me at least. The cube was 20.5" x 18.5" x 21.5" but like all Oceanics, the price was a bit steep at $100 for the tank (with glass top and fixture) and $150 for the stand (which was also very nice looking) and both were on sale. I'll post a link to a pic of them below. Anyway, PetSmart didn't have crickets either, so off I went to the locally owned pet store.

While I was there, I spotted a 72g All-Glass bowfront for $240 with the glass tops, and $200 for the stand. Now I have yet another temptation to hold back.

Now you know why my friends and relatives think I have a tank fetish.

I think it would be nice to have a cube, and design some sort of 4 sided background in the middle so that you have background that can be viewed from any angle.
Or no background and a really nice landscape would be nice too.

I wish it was that simple. I am 36 years old and would be put on restricion if I bought another tank. Right now I have twelve 10 gallon tanks, a 30 hex, a 42 hex, a 58, and a 90. So as you can see my house is a small zoo. hehehe

I got my hands on one of these tanks and I love it.

I am in the process of applying the coco fiber to the foam back. It’s pretty much the final step, but man is it a pain!!

To the left will be the land. On the right I have a piece of ghost wood to us as a barrier to the water feature. The wood also hides the pump which drives the waterfall. All the wires and tubing are hidden behind the foam. For heat I have one of those titanium heaters with the external controller. I am really excited to spoil my auratus.

If you don't mind my asking, how much did you pay for yours?

BTW, I went to another PetSmart last night, and they had a $37 gallon with stand for $50 more.

tuthelimit Jan 11, 2004 06:28 PM

The tank was regularly $120 and the stand $150. But there was a 20% off sale so the total was about $215. It is an expensive tank, but I wanted something unique.

I was sort of confused by your post. If you mean a 37 gallon tank, they are not worth the money in my opinion. I have one I use to grow out cynotilapia fry. The tank is much too high for its narrow width. A 29 gallon would be much easier to deal with.

Come on get the cube!

No, I meant a 37 gallon cube. I went back and picked it up today. Same finish as yours, except it's 24.5" x18.5" x 21.5". The stand was the same price, so I picked up that also. Will transfer my 2 azureus to it once I get it built and the plants put in.

That size sounds awesome! Good luck and post pics!
