I have an extra 5 gallon tank(long), what will fit in side?

oogieboogie Jan 11, 2004 03:07 AM

I just moved one of my Ornates into a 10 gallon and now I have an extra 5 gallon lying around....I'm a big frog fan, but I don't really want to go the ornate route again, I already have 2!

What is a colorful terrestrial frog that will live comfortably in a 5 gallon? At least for a while? I realize that there might not be many frogs (animals for that matter) that will live their entire lives in a 5 gallon. If there are even any frogs or animals at all.

Im just doing some resarch and seeing if anyone can shed some light on this. Im itchin to fill this cage up and all that I can come up with is a smaller tarantula (deathly afraid of spiders but might get one to scare me straight), a scorpion (closely resemebles a spider) or possibly a smaller frog.

If anyone can suggest anything at all, frog or otherwise, it would be greatly appreciated. But please leave out any animal that is aquatic. Im not a water person o)

Baby Pixies, Salamanders, baby narrow mouthed, mantellas and arrows are pretty small but I heard they need a big enclosure, that is according to the people here so you don't really know if they are just overacting or what because they tend to do that often.

oogieboogie Jan 11, 2004 02:20 PM

I was defiently thinking about a dwarf pyxie, but it definetly wont fit in their its entire life. But its still on the top of the list, i can always move it out into a bigger tank later. I am also thinking about a chubby frog as well. They are really cute, but again wont live in that tank for ever.

Not really to hip on the salamanders or mantellas. Ill look up the "baby narrow mouthed". But I like the dart frogs alot. But as you have said, ive read that they need a larger enclosure.

I also really love the whites tree frogs *alot*. But i dont think one of them can fit into a 5g. *cries*

If you really want a whites, as I said earlier, go and buy a rubbermaid sweater box. They are cheap, can be modified to fit just about any organism, and come in TONS of shapes and sizes. You should have good luck with it. If you are handy you can add all sorts of things to it (doors, windows, ect. ) or you can leave it as simple as just creating openings to add ventilation. Andy

STOP!!! Before you buy that ugly pyxie, you should know that it is actually recommended that you put your poison dart in a 5 gallon aquarium. I dart per 5 gallon. GOODIE!!! Now you can buy one poison and live with a very colorful frog!

oogieboogie Jan 11, 2004 11:58 PM

Pyxies arent oooogly! I like um, plus they get FAT.

But the dart frogs are very purty. I was in the petshop today though and was informed that they need UVB (i should have researched them a bit more). Im not into anything right now that will need UVB. Its just too expensive. But i do looooooove their colors.

Read what Mark J said?! You don't need UVB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You can keep them darts in your 5 gallon FOREVER!!! And have some neat ass spankin' frogs!!! Comm'on buy one before they RUN OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Besides, if you buy a pyxie instead, after a couple of months, you'd have to get a bigger enclosure and that cost more money, my friend. So what if Pyxies grow big and fat, so does Aunt Gretchen!

nasr_36 Jan 12, 2004 12:19 PM

Id start out with a minimun of a 10g for darts. You might fit a reed frog in there if you have enough height.

Darts are pretty, BUT SO ARE BIG FAT FROGIES !

markj Jan 12, 2004 02:18 AM

I have never read anywhere that darts need uvb, I have been keeping mine for 2 years without it and they are near perfect, everyone else that I know of does not buy uvb bulbs for their dart frogs. Come to the dart frog forum and search for facts or just look for a website on google. Generally better to start out with a 10 gallon for a dart frog then generally 5 gallons per additional frog.

Picture Below....

holy -- Hey! Whats wrong with Aunt Gretchen!! haha

But Im still debating about the Darts. They are on the top of the list right now but im still hesitant to keeping them in a 5gallon tank. While it seems like thats plenty room for that small of a frog, they are all saying 10g min. *shrug*

nasr_36 -- Really looking for a frog with some bright colors or something unique like a whites tree frog.

eve -- Damn Straight! BIG FAT FROGIES FOR LIFE!!

markj -- Thanks for the info Mark! So your saying I should avoid putting a dart frog into my 5gallon?

Right now im leaning to a spider (ornamental baboom, indian ornamental, cobalt blue, usambara) or a scorpion or a milk frog (though they are expensive!!!)

Nice... I think your 5 gallon is so nice, I might even consider granting sexual favors in exchange of that.
Anyway, you are probably talking to over acting frog puritants. That's why you keep seeing that they should be housed in a 10 gallon. What i read is a little different, you can house 2 darts in a 10 gallon and add extra 5 gallon for every frog you will add. Besides, a 10 gallon is too big for a dart. It might even have trouble finding its food or you to enjoy viewing it. So what else are you waiting for, go with a POISON ARROW DART FROG!!! They are neat!

Not sure if my GF would appreciate that one, plus she just gave me a better deal! Sexual favors and I get to keep the tank!! O)

As for the the 10g, I just go by what I read since I have no clue about them. As I stated it *looks* more then enough in my eyes!

Now the only problem is that id want at elast two dart frogs cause they are uber cool! Maybe ill just have to settle for one.

Decisions decisions decisions...

do you have any Darts>? Got any pics if so?

Actually, um, this may sound funny but I have a phobia with frogs. The only reason I got a pacman is to help myself with my phobia by gradually getting used to this frog. The reason I choose a pacman is because, of all the frogs out there that I know, pacmans least resembles a frog. They are round and colorful and they don't move much. That's also the reason why I choose a female albino, they don't croak and they remain their bright coloration.
Maybe if I got rid of my phobia or my pacman dies, which ever comes first, I might get a poison dart.

And here I think you have tons of darts! haha

Thats ok, cause I am deathly afraid of spiders. And thats exactly why I was thinking about getting a spider. I want a real purty one like a cobalt blue, Indian Ornamental or Usambara... but ill ahve to put a few pad locks on the cage if i get one!

If it ever escaped id leave my house until I could hire someone to go in and search for it.

10 gallon to big for a dart? I keep my crickets in larger enclosures. Im not sure where you read that, but it isnt true.

As for the food, they will find it. Darts spend practically their whole time hunting anyway. Just dump the fruit flies infront of them.

oogieboogie- (im also nasr_36) Id suggest a small mantella like M. aurantiaca (milotympanum), or even regular Aurantiaca. Just try to provide alot of cover.

spydergirl Jan 13, 2004 05:34 PM

i definately dont sugegst a whites tree frog or a milk frog. a 5 gallon is too small for any kind of tree frog! cramming a dart in there would kind of push it, a mantella could work. im thinking you should go for the tarantula. i have T's myself, and i love them. the kinds you mentioned are agressive species, and not something you might want to start out with if youre planning on handling the spider(which youll need to do for cage cleaning and whatnots) i have a Pink Zebra Beauty Tarantula, and theyre awesomely beautiful.shes brown, with tannish, white lines all around her legs and then very fine pink highlighted hairs on her whole body, shes beautiful. she lets me hold her,but i only do so when im changing her cage around or cleaning, and just looking her over to make sure shes in good health. good luck with whatever you go with, but make sure you reasearch a TON before you get a new animal!

oogieboogie Jan 13, 2004 10:12 PM

Moe88 - I did a lil resarch on them and if i recal right (which i might not be) they are not very colorful frogs. If I stick a frog in there I want it to be something colorful im thinking. I know that I am being picky, but thanks a ton for suggesting some options!! I really appreciate it.

spydergirl - I never planned on putting a White's in there. I know that it would never fit. o) As for a milk frog, they are extremely tiny and thats quite alot of room for them to crawl around in, but as it is, i dont want to spend 50 some bucks on a milk frog anyway. hehe

And no matter what spider I get, it will *never* be held *ever* That is why i went with all those species, because they are aggressive and bueatiful. For cage cleanings I still have n o intention of actually handling the spider *lol* I can simply put it into another containter (my gf has experience with spiders so she will be helping me out with the majiority of it). And yup I always do my research before I get an animal, Im not that rich or cruel to do otherwise o)

bgexotics - Ill check them out and see if there are any in my local pet shop.

snakeguy88 - No offense taken at all! In fact i quite agree with you. After the continuous research ive been attempting *ha* I am completely agreeing that no species of frogs will fit into that 5g well. I am moving twords a scoprion or a spider.

But with that in mind I am still interested in the future for another frog, jsut with a larger enclosure!

And as for still asking questions about Horned Frogs. If the rule of thumb is not to get another frog until you know absolutely everything about the one you have, 95% of the people on this site should not own two frogs. While I may still be asking questions about horned frogs, that does not mean that i should not get another pet. I will always be asking questions about any animals I own here. Why? Because there is GREAT information that users give, such as yourself!

BTW I really hope you replied to my substrate question. O)

Everyone is freaking out about darts but I think that they are pictureing larger dendrobates species. Their are many "thumbnail" species of dart frogs, named so because of their tny size. Some of the most beautiful frogs are included in this group. I am thinking that a hevily planted 5 1/2 gallon tank would not be too smalle for a pair or trio of these. What you have to think about with darts though is not whether they are goign to fit in the tank size wize but rather about territorial issues. Many dart frogs are extremely territorial and will constantly fight if not given enough space. I have 4 mantellas in a 20 H terrarium and they each have their own little space. I think that a group of the black-eared red mantellas (M. aurentica milotympanum) would do great in a 5 1/2 gallon terrarium as well. They are tiny but bright red. Try doing some reading on the thumbnail species of dart frogs. I am by no means a dart frog expert, so I am just giving some direction not advice.

people that are still asking questions around horned frogs (no offense meant to the original poster!!!!)? Darts require pretty specific care and the larger species are the ones that are easier to care for(not the smaller, more expensive species that others suggested). IMO, there aren't any great species for a 5 gallon tank. ALL my frogs, including my darts before my self hydrating system flopped on vacation, use the full extent of their cages. I gave my darts 10 gallons per frog and they seemed to enjoy the extra space (as compared to the somewhat cramped display tank they came from). If I were you, I would buy the tank to fit the frog, not the opposite. If you want to do something with the 5 gallon, maybe breed crickets or hissing cockroaches in it. Could be profitable and save you money and trips to stores. If you want to get a different frog, just buy another tank (10 gals are only something like 10 dollars, or if you want, just get sweater boxes. They don't look as nice, but they work extremely well).
