Twin Leopard Tortoises

bvpham Jan 11, 2004 09:48 AM

This is only my second year of breeeding Leopards. But yesterday, I saw this egg pipping and this morning this what I found. I have not cracked them open, but it appears that there were twins in egg #33. It will be interesting to see if they are Siamese or if they are completely seperate. Appears separate. For those more experienced, how often have you all encountered this phenomenon. Thanks. Will keep you updated. BVP

I've hatched out about 400. I've only had one major deformity(born without an eye) if you don't count malformed scutes. I've never hatched out twins. The one that you can see in the photo looks flawless. Can you post them side by side when they finish hatching?
Congratulations.
How big was the mom? How big was the egg and how big were the babies?

I have only hatched out one set of twins.
They were from an egg that looked like an oversized peanut and that was obviously two eggs joined together.
The hatchlings were both normal sized and were not conjoined.
There is a photo of the egg in one of Dick Paull's editions of his redfoot book.
Also, the two hatchlings were not identical in that their head scutes and leg scales were different.

thats pretty cool! although i don't have pictures as they are in the care of a friend, this past summer an egg laid by my hermanns tortoise hatched out twins. they were on the same yolk i think, and were both incredibly tiny. one has survived and one died. i guess it was amazing that even one of them survived. she also laid an egg which hatched out one slightly below average sized hatchling, and on the same yolk there was an underdeveloped twin. these episodes were between 2 clutches.
