Pregnant RES????

luigee17 Jun 05, 2003 11:32 AM

I have a male and female res and have witnessed them mating in the past year or so. In the past few months the female has grown a lot and has become very irritable. I am wondering if maybe she is pregnant. I have tried putting her in a tank filled with potting soil for her to lay them, but she hasn't. Any suggestions????

Depends on how old they are, whether they were mating or just practicing. If she is pregnant, she'll not eat when she's ready to lay. Mine like to get as far away from the pond as possible to lay and they search for the perfect spot for a while. Make sure the soil is fairly packed, it needs to support her weight while she digs. (she'll dig a pear shaped hole about 4-6" deep) Oh, and prepare for the admonitions from others to destroy the eggs.
