wax worm moths

gutloader Jan 11, 2004 10:32 AM

i've read that moth wings are hard to digest for chameleons..is this true??..i find it hard to believe that kept at the right temp. that a chameleon would have a hard time with this...i usually put a couple of cacoons under a piece of moss and let them transform into moths in the jax enclosure

Our chameleons don't seem to be aware of this information... *LOL*

They go nuts over moths - even the small wax worm moths. If we have silk worms (after they have mated and layed eggs), these are also a welcome treat. We have also fed the large hawkmoths (from hornworms) with no ill effects.

In the wilds, there are numerous species of moths (some huge) that are certainly food for the various chameleons species.

There are electronic devices available to attract and capture outdoor moths too. So, we don't agree that it is harmful. Just use common sense as to the appropriate size for your chameleon, and add a few for variation of food when available.

Hope this helps,

I think there was a recent post where someone said something about the scales on the moths wings. They are perfectly safe and digestible for your cham. If you wild collect any just be cautious as to where and how frequent. They drink nectar (those that feed, not all do) and if pesticides have been used on a plant it can easily transfer to the moth. If you are sticking with ones you have reared - go for it. Not sure where you live, but I will often collect in the autumn/early winter as many of these do not feed as adults.
