I have mine in a 4x2x1 cage. My snake is 32" long, no idea what she weighs. The most popular choice is 20 gallon aquarium. I suggest at least a 30 gallon breeder. Mine is made of pine with acrylic windows- the only drawback, it cost $125 . 20 gallon aquariums aren't sufficient.

if it is just a pet and not a breeder or you don't have a large collection. The bigger the better. I have my 2 ball python in 4 foot long rubber maid like containers. (just drill holes near the top all the way around make sure the lid locks good and you have a large cage! make sure to use a lamp dimmer for your UTH though, even on glass)
a 20 gal long is good for a bp that is 1-2 feet. A 40 gal(3ftLong by 18 inches wide by 18 inches tall) breeder is also a good size for an adult (about 4ft). But as I said bigger is better.

Get a clear rubbermaid, the biggest one (Longest and widest, and atleast 12 inches tall, They had a holiday Iris container out that was for fake trees) use a drill or something hot to melt a hole, if you use a drill go slow! if you try and rush it you will crack the rubbermaid.
drill holes all the way around.
After that wipe out the rubbermaid with a damp cloth and dry it (takes away static electricity)
put down substrate, water bowl (big enough to soak in) and 2 hides (one on each end)
Put your uth under one side, hook it up to your lamp dimmer and your all set~!
Oh almost forgot get an indoor/outdoor digital theremometer from wal-mart or some where like that.
put the probe in the cage right over the UTH and you will be able to read the temps (should be 90-95 degrees. no higher than 95) You really do need the lamp dimmer as most heat pads can get over 105 degrees.
