New Leo

skits Jan 11, 2004 11:19 AM

Hi, this is my first time having a leopard. I've had plenty of other reptiles, and i did my research on care for my leo, as well as research on the different substrates. Heres my problem, I picked up cherokee pictured below, about 2 or 3 days ago, she had just gotten done shedding. She is very alert, and active at night, a year old, but one thing... i can't get her to eat, even when i hold the food, its like she has no depth perception, she misses every time. If i put 2 crickets in her cage and let them waltz around for a couple of hours, she takes no interest in them. Please help if you can with some advice. Oh and i got her from petsmart, which i'm starting to wonder why they had Yr old leos, called "Jumbo".

ok, now on top of that, i was just handling her, and she emitted a wet "Substance", no smell to it, but i'm guessing she just used me as a toilet. Aren't leo's supposed to have dry "Business".

it was more of a clear substance, i'm worried, cause i don't know how reputable this store is.

That's normal-- the clear liquid is a normal part of their feces. She was just sort of peeing on you in protest. (: I had a gecko that did the same thing to me. It means, put me the hell down, now!

I got very worried when it happened to me, too. I thought the gecko was all of a sudden incontinent due to weakness or fear (she was very sick). Instead, it just turned out she was grumpy and sick of being handled. In my short time keeping leos I've found they can be just as vindictive as cats. (;

Thanks for the advice, i'll leave her be for a couple of days.

Just leave the Gecko alone. If you've only had it for 3 or so days, I wouldn't be worried. I usually get mine, and leave them alone for a week or so, and they eat readily. Just don't handle it, move anything in the cage, look at it, or even think about picking her up. Just leave it be.

Cherokee is just stressd out form the move. She looks fine in the pic. No pieces of shed stuck to her eyes or toes. Just imagine what you would feel like if someone 100 times you size picked you up, stuck you in a box for a bit (travel time to new home), then placed you in an enviroment totally unfamiliar. Boy, geckos are tough! Humans would never be able to adapt to a situation like that.I'm sure she will be fine just let her "slowly" get used to you as her provider and protector.

Good luck with her,

Tim

Hi, congrats on your new leo. It is very common and normal for a new leo to not eat right away due to stress. Give it a few days and relax. Also, try to feed after the lights go out.
