Possibly fracture/sprain and swelling on crestie's leg

eveliina Jan 11, 2004 01:36 PM

I noticed this right this evening (it wasn't there this morning) when I went to mist my cresties. This one had quite swollen leg and didn't put any weight on it. I'm not sure if it seems like sprained because of the swelling.
She took mealworm when I offered it but her walking look really difficult and clumsy. I took off her climbing branches so she wouldn't drop off of them and hurt more.
Here are two pics of the leg, you can see in the lower pic that she doesn't really use that leg.

What do you think?

I think I can't do more than wait, she is so small and don't let even me touch her much so I don't think there is much point taking her to vet (not that we had so many vets in Finland who could help much with reptiles).

Thanks,
Eveliina

If you can find a vet, there are things they can do, even for tiny geckos.

It looks to me like a calcium defiency. My gecko got that once too. I dont think it's a sprain or faracture because it looks more like it's in the middle of the leg, and depending on what your cage is like..a sprain or fracture would most likely be aroudn the "ankle" of the lizard. Make sure to sprinkle its food with calcium. Start adding a little extra too. Do u have a UVB light? If you don't, make sure your calcum powder has D3, it's needed so the lizard can actually absorb the needed calcium. You might also want to have it in a seperate tank with lower branches, an dless hiding places for close monitoring. Good Luck!!

Thanks for answering!
I agree it looks like calcium deficency, I thought it might have MBD, but the swelling shows in one leg and there is no other symptoms of MBD. But what ever it is, I have added more calcium and vitamins to her food to be sure (I'm trying to get her to eat babyfood which I have added calcium and vitamins, she hasn't ever touched it in the time I've had her, dusted insects she eats).
I don't have uvb light now, but I'm going to get it, and the vitamin powder I use has D3 in it . She lives alone in her little tank with two cork bark pieces if she wants to hide.
I don't want to take her to vet now, if it doesn't get worse. She doesn't let even me handle her and a proper vet (who knows about reptiles) is 2-3 hours drive from here, so I think it would stress her too much and she is doing okay for now.
