A Few Peachthroat questions

mike13 Jan 11, 2004 03:00 PM

My first post in this forum. I have 24" peachthroat and had few questions about acquiring more.
- Who are some good sources of cb or clean imports?
- Is it possible to get an accurately sexed juvenile? I've seen some ads for sexed monitors and had some questions as to how accurate you can sex young monitors now.
I am assuming mine is a male, so I want to get a pair or females, but how accurately can that be guaranteed? Also, what is a good breeding size, how large does an enclosure need to be? and, can they be housed together, or should they be kept seperate? Thanks for any responses.

I don't know... the last time I was there, they had a bunch of skinny, emaciated savanahs, beardeds, asst. african agamids.. They also have their gorgeous high end stuff, like their boelens, salvadorii, sulfur water, cummingi, etc, but I was a bit disappointed to see the sick, dying animals that they had for sale.

Speaking of skinny, emaciated animals... did anybody go to the white plains expo this weekend? I just went today to browse around, and was appalled at the number of imported animals. There had to be more imports than captive bred!! I saw this one "lackie" walking around the show with his "proud purchase" of a dumerili....the poor thing's spine was showing through his skin, it's hips were bulging out of its skin, and it didn't appear to be able to open its eyes... There were other people there walking around with their sick, wild caught, new purchases... I kind of wanted to stop them and ask them, "hey, does this animal you bought look healthy in any way??".

Another thing about the show... there were people selling random chachkas at their tables... One table stood out more than any other. There was some guy selling maybe five or six deli cups with baby hognose, and the rest of his table was filled with random crap that he must have dug out of his attic, or was unable to sell at the garage sale.. I mean, this guy had children's books, crappy toys, and a pair of old, weathered BOOTS!!! that's right, he was selling a pair of old black boots, at a reptile show.hey, they were only ten bucks, i was debating it....just kidding. Stuff like this really pissed me off, when I know people who tried to get a table to sell their legitimate, captive bred offspring there, but were turned away, because all tables were booked by these slack jawed yokels.... Very disappointing.

I did not mean to bash d & j earlier... I think doug and jimmy are awesome guys and are friendly and knowledgeable, and have got one of the best 'gigs I've seen in my herping days. I just found it weird that they had skinny, ill looking imports for sale in a place where they breed things like crocs, cummings, prasinus, macraei, etc....
