Temperature gradients

Varepguy Jan 11, 2004 03:31 PM

I have owned corn snakes in the past, and am thinking of getting another soon.My house is warm and on the cool side of my tank it's between 75 degrees and 80 and on the warm side it's usually in the 80's 80-81 degrees. Is this a good temperature for corn snakes. I was also wondering what temps do you guys keep your snakes at.

Your cool side is good but 81 is not warm enough for the warm side of the tank especially after a large meal. You should have the warm side up closer to 88 with hide spots on both ends of the tank. If you have a basking branch you can go slightly higher than that with a heat bulb. Your snake will probably regurge it's meal if 81 is as warm as it can get.

I personally think that corns are just a little more hardy that lots of us make them out to be. And, no, I don't think that your snake will regurge at those temps if it is otherwise healthy and well cared for. And if you give him time to digest after a meal. The cooler the temps, the more time you may need to give him before handling. And maybe don't give HUGE prey items that leave a giant lump. My corns eat like pigs, digest great and thrive at cooler temps than that. Duffy
