Experienced breeders question

ghostwolf Jan 11, 2004 05:29 PM

I know there are many experienced Leo breeders on this forum. My question is, in what way would you deal with this situation: You sold animals to a person as a certain sex. Those animals turned out to be the opposite sex of what they were sold as. Just wondering what actions different breeders would take if this happened to them.

I did that this year to two really good herp friends of mine. It was my bad (I felt like crap) - but we worked it out. I offered them the money back - but we worked out a deal to send them some stock this year.

Try to work it out - mistakes happen. As a breeder - I try to make it right, I guess . . .

I have sold geckos that turned out to be opposite of what they were incubated for, as well as purchased a few that turned out to be the wrong sex. I would suggest that you find out what the breeder's policy/guarantee is (if they have one) before you decide on which approach to take. For example, I have a written policy disclaimer which states that the gender of one of my babies cannot be 100% guaranteed until it reaches 4 months of age. Of course, I would do my best to work with the buyer if they were really unhappy... Even though I incubate for specific sexes, temperature variations sometimes can occur.

Depending on the age and what I told them I would most likely replace the geckos in question with the right sex. One quick tip. You can put juvies on fresh newspaper for a day or so and the males anal pores show up very nicely!
