Before I went on vacation during the holidays, I placed small cultures of melanogaster in each of my tanks. The media is potato flake-based, with brewer's yeast, sugar and some other vitamins added. All the cultures produced very well while I was gone (about 9 days), but I came home to find Grindal worms (at least that's what I believe them to be: not more than 1/2 inch long, skinny, and pure white) all over the glass walls of every tank that had a culture in it. I don't really mind this, since the frogs seem to love 'em. Although, it makes me wonder... where did the worms come from? I suppose they came from the potato flakes, but I'm not exactly sure about this.

Yesterday, I noticed that one of my pumilio laid a clutch of eggs on a brom leaf and one of the eggs was touching the glass. About an hour after I discovered the clutch, I discovered about a dozen Grindal worms feeding on the newly-laid and viable egg. They made quick-work of it too. Thankfully, it was the only egg that they could reach, since it was the only one touching the glass. It's been a few days, and most of the worms are no longer visible, but it was a pretty strange occurence that I thought I'd like to share.

I believe there were eggs inside the potato flakes when I bought them. I can't think of any reason that ALL of the tanks with cultures in them ended up having grindal worms in them, other than there must have been a large amount of eggs inside the potato flakes themselves (yuck!). It was a brand new box, also.
I use the same mix for all of my cultures, but I've never noticed any grindal worms in them before. Strange....

I wonder if maybe you already had the worms. they just surfaced to feed with the ff in there.

That possibility had crossed my mind as well. But the tanks are relatively new (going for about 2 months) and have gravel bottoms only, no soil. I've never introduced any grindals into any of my tanks in the past, so I guess I may never know.
