Such a long wait... (Egg Update)

Turtlegirl Jun 05, 2003 12:39 PM

Hey all

Just another update on my eggs....

18 of them still look perfect but the 'yellowish' looking 2 (which have been separated from the begining) are starting to dent in now and one is a little molded so I think I'm gonna throw em out... :?

Anyway, my question is: What is the earliest I could expect them to hatch?
They were layed on May 14th so I know I still have awhile but I was just curious

I hate the wating thing to. My first clutch this year was 30 eggs! All still look viable and they have been in the incubator for a month now. My female just layed 31 more eggs two days ago, but when getting out of her burrow I think she stepped on a couple of the eggs in one area because 3 of them were "flat" is the only way to describe it. So we still have 28 more in the incubator.

To answer your question the earliest you can expect them to start hatcing is 55 days after they have been layed. so about 8 weeks.

If your eggs are this new and those ones are already compressing in and turning brown/yellow I would say they are done for. You might want to put them in a plastic bag and freeze them before you toss them so they dont some how hatch and end up in a landfill some where. If you decide not to throw them out quite yet, watch for fungus growth.

Good luck with your eggs.

I wouldnt throw out any eggs unless your certain! That was good advice given to me

A couple of eggs in Syds 1st clutch this year gave me a little scare. One had mold from week one-until the end. Mold which kept growing no matter what I did. Of course it was seperated from the rest but I did not give up on it. Another egg leaked clear, "jelly" textured liquid half way through incubation. I accidently over watered the eggs and was told that the babies would probably be small and less healthy and that the egg leaking was going to die. I still didnt give up on that egg because it leaked but then kind of sealed back up on its own the same day. Anyways, the point is, both eggs hatched and out came healthy, alert, strong babies As a matter of fact those two babies are bigger and eating better then some of the healtiest looking eggs.

Even though they were slightly over watered, every egg hatched out a good size baby (4-4 1/2 inches right out of the egg) and all are eating and growing like weeds.

I would keep the "bad" looking eggs seperated but keep incubating them to your certain they are infertile or bad. Goodluck! LindsayMarie

Thanks for the reply...
The 2 'bad' ones were yellower than the others from day one but otherwise looked fine. But now those 2 are starting to cave in and one is a little bit molded- both of them feel 'hollow' as well...
You're right though, I don't know for sure that they're bad and I'd feel AWFUL if I tossed them out and they were going to hatch after all...
They're separated from the others so I'll just keep em in the incubator and see what happens

Thanks

Wow, that's alot of eggs!

Thank you for the info.

I'll be sure to freeze them b4 I throw em out.
I think I'll keep them around for a while longer though to make sure they're really 'bad' before I toss them...

Thank u!
