Safe Substrate??

I have a Mexican Black King Snake & am using washed play sand from home depot as substrate that I pour through a sifter before putting in the aquarium. I feed him in another container so he doesnt ingest any of it. Is this safe as a substrate
as I prefer to use sand over other substrates but want to be
sure its not harmful to my snake.
