Hatchling mortality isn't uncommon for painteds and other aquatics. From my personal experience, painteds are very weak compared to many other species and it takes extreme care and a stroke of luck to keep them alive. Out of your batch, you had one die and I assume you were keeping all of them in the same conditions. Once one is heading down the sick path,I don't know if we could've told you anything that would've brought it back to health other than keep it warm, quiet, etc. Sometimes they just die for no reason other than being weaker.

You found the eggs in your yard, right? Maybe next time you can leave them to Mother Nature to deal with rather than bring them into your home to raise them. Good luck with the rest of the babies you have left.

Also, when you have a sick animal, you shouldn't completely rely on a forum to "make your animal better". Ultimately, we pay the exotic vets the big bucks to (hopefully) fix our pets!

Let me respond to the 2 remarks made after I posted for some kind of help or ideas... First of all, the turtles I saved and I do say SAVED have had a much better , safer, healtier life then they could have had in the wild. I am saying that because I have seen many of these dead either by a car, a child , pesticides and their water supply that they have to live in, around where I live. I educated myself on everything I could, from the food they eat to the lighting that keeps them healtly. Which is much much more than anyone else would do for most animals kept. I have been a completely responsible pet owner with everything i own. I didnt get up one day and say " hmm , let me see if I can be irrisponsible in snatching something from the wild and see if I can keep it alive" and not take care of them the way they should be taken care of.

2nd, I didnt expect some miracle drug from posting at this forum, what I did expect however was that someone would answer with ideas of what could be wrong. You know, some type of compassion from one pet owner to another. That is after all what this site is sapose to be. A help forum in which people talk about and ask questions about their pets. Which I have to say, not 1 person answered anything untill it was to late for my turtle. I heard nothing untill after I posted what a waste it was to ask for help. Which it certainly was.

I hope you all enjoy your pets,, even those that some believe shouldnt be owned by anyone. I believe that as long as you have the correct habitat and you love and care for your animals , then you have every right to own it, how many here have a cat or dog?? oh yeah thats right they belong in captivity

bye all and enjoy

Before posting an urgent question its a good idea to look back through the previous posts to see if the remedy is already in the history of posts somewhere. The other suggestion, when posting something that needs an urgent reply its a good practice to notice the frequency of posts. Notice that on average there is one post a week in the Painted Turtle Forum. With that kind of frequency patience is a good thing to have. One more suggestion, its a good habit to recognise some of the more frequent people who post and address the question directly to them. Sorry for the passing of the little turtle. We can only do our best, the rest is up to the animal.
