Here is my temporary enclosure till summertime (then Im going to move the bearded dragons in there), and move my iggy to a new "cage".

Here is Miles' temperary winter vacation spot. He is moving to a bigger resort that will be about 4X4X6 in the spring. His old tank will house some Rainbow Geckos.

I haven't posted much lately on here, but things are definitely getting out of hand... So far, I see two aquariums, and no enclosures, so here goes. This photo is from October, 2000. I got this 4 months after I got my iguana Dexter. It's 2.5'x2.5'x5', and technically TOO SMALL for an adult iguana. He is allowed to free roam, so this just functions as a home base.

This photo is from a year ago (January)...

This is one of the most recent photos I have of Dexter. He is now three and a half years old, and weighs between 7-8 lbs.. He is over 4' long, which means he is longer than the shelves in his enclosure. The enclosure is his space, and he is occasionally very protective of it (during breeding season - now). The sliding doors are handy, because I can leave it open for him to come and go as he pleases. He has another basking location in my livingroom, and has another chair he like to hang out on. He likes hanging out on the bed too.

The point is, if you take care of these guys correctly, they will grow very fast and need their space! (especially if you have a testosterone crazed ig like Dexter...)

We're just trying to get ideas for when we build our great big enclosure for our iguanas...the enclosure will be sectioned off if we have to to provide privacy or temporary housing for a grumpy iguana or an injured one.

This is when we first built it. We have made some interior
design changes since then.

This is the 5'x3' by 7' tall enclosure that we built for our ig. We have recently added a small pool with a waterfall to help out with the humidity (and boy has it helped!). This habitat works very well for smaller igs and gives them lots of hiding places and exploring room, but I would suggest a larger habitat for a healthy full grown iguana.

My husband and I gathered the vines from the woods around our house. Some of the most amazing twists and curves in the vines are way up high (30-50 feet up there) and are very difficult to get to. The vines can actually choke the trees and serve no real purpose, so most places, even parks, are more than willing to let you harvest them.
If there are no wooded areas near you, you may wish to order vines from www.jworlds.com who harvests them in the same manner we did. I've never checked on the prices, but I know that the enclosure we built for less than $300 would have cost about $2500 if we had purchased it from them. They have gorgeous enclosures, though!
Also, remember that any time you bring things in from the outside to make sure they have been de-buggified. Two ways to do this are to make sure they have been in below freezing temperatures for a minimum of 48 hours, or use a bleach/water mixture and spray them generously then rince thoroughly and dry before introducing them to the habitat to avoid any little buggers that might hurt your baby! Good luck!

WOW!!! That is awesome. You must have the happiest Ig ever.

Sam-N-Ella Jan 13, 2004 02:00 AM

Here is an enclosure that took me less than 1 day to build. It only cost me $40.00 except for decoratins and lighting and heat. The wood I got at home depot, but it was mostly scraps. I recently added fake flowers for decoration and hiding places. I left the bottom open for storage, but I am going to extend the enclosure into the bottom soon. Then it will be 6' tall inside. There is plenty of room for now, but I think it needs to be taller. I was loosing some heat on the left side so I put a piece of cardboard w/clear plastic on the outside to see if it kept more heat in. I works. Now I need plexiglass. It's not the prettiest enclosure, but it works and they seem to like it.
