Cooling period

danread Jan 12, 2004 05:47 AM

Hi all,

i the future, i would definitely like to breed my pair of collards (as son as they are fat and healthy that is). The only problem that i can see wil be bit of an obstacle is the cooling period to allow them to brumnate. I cant keep them outside tocool, as it would be too cold, or the temps would fluctuate to much, the same goes with the attic or the garage, and the room temperature in the house is to warm for them to brumnate (they need 10 to 15 degrees celcius right?). How do you all go about hibernating your collards? Is there any way of rigging up a small fridge to work at a warmer temp than usual. Thanks!

Dan.

p.s both my collards have fattened up considerably since the last photos you saw, i think the waxworms must be doing a good job!

Hi Dan,

Last year I had some of mine brumated at around 18-20 degrees celcius. They produces lots of hatchlings, so that worked fine.

At the moment I have a pair brumating at around 25 degrees celcius. They have done so for around 2 months. I checked up on this weekend and they looked fine. So it looks like brumation can be done at higher temps.
