How big is yours?

twinoats Jan 12, 2004 10:50 AM

Just curious: how big are your chameleons? Weights aren't commonly found in books, so when my 2yo female gracilis just tipped the scales at 148g, indicating another growth spurt, I started to wonder if this is an average size for her species or if she's truly a freak of nature. She seems massive (radiographs show she's not gravid, either).

My male Ambanja (13 months old) is 132g.
My female Ambanja (12 months), average 50g.

My WC Carpets, about 18gs, adult males and females.
CB Carpets, about 14gs, adults.

WC Rhampholeon brevs, average 2-4gs, including gravid females.

How big are yours? I am curious.

No I don't think I jinxed them I named them that after they got sick. I've only had them since the 28th of December and it's the first time I've had to deal with sick chameleons. I got into veiled chameleons when I was 14 and had a pair of them for two years Calypso and Camelot. When I was 16 my parent sent me to an RTC and sold them. Now 6 years later I'm getting back into them.

The male is very large and healthy when he grips my hanf it often cuts me and pinches. He is very strong and eats about 25 crickets a day. He grew so fast every week he was significantly bigger I now know it's a bad idea, but I think it was because I over did everything. I gave him a lot of food, a lot of space, lots of water, lots of light, and perhaps so many supplements. I've cut back on them. but the only thing that isn't perfect about him is his face is kind of white. Brightly colored body pale face.
Delay is smaller than the other female because I think there is something a little off about her. She seems healthy and eats well I got her from a disreputable person who lied about shipping her overnight, she arrived 3 days later which is why I call her Delay. When I opened the box I found a stunted 3 month old with a disporportionatly small body and a pinched face. She was a yellowish gray and now she is ussually the color of the driftwood in her tank. She loves to hide and while not aggressive is not that comfortable around people or chameleons though she gets along with Persephone. She has grown from 5 to 10 inches, but she is thin with long spindly legs that bend strangely. My fiance thinks her face looks asian. I got persephone fairly young and she is doing well but she is a lot smaller than the male. She is 11 inches while he is 22 inches (including tail).

I was kidding about the the jinxing. I sort of wondered if you named them after they fell ill. Actually I apologize for even joking about it. I went back to re-read your posts as I recalled the problems you had with them. I truly hope they turn around and are doing somewhat better. Personally I think you should report the woman you purchased them from - it makes me sick.

Have you checked into Delay having MBD? It sounds like it (to my inexperienced ear/eye) which in some cases can be somewhat reversible. Maybe post it separately?

Hi Kerry,

Good question!
We don't keep gracilis, so we can't help with that species, but here is some weights on the some of the ones we do keep.

>> Male Ambanja (3 yrs old) 217g
>> Male Ambanjas (over 1 yr) 160-182g
>> Female Ambanjas (over 1 yr) 55-74g

>> Male Sambava (3.5 yrs old) 242g
>> Male Sambavas (over 1 yr) 130-152g
>> Female Sambavas (over 1 yr) 60-76g

>> Male Sirama/Ambilobe (wc-est 3 yrs) 398g (Pams)

>> Male Tamatave (3 yrs) 202g
>> Female Tamataves (over 1 yr) 52-63g

>> Male Nosy Bes (over 1 yr) 152-168g
>> Female Nosy Bes (over 1 yr) 50-82g

>> Male Veileds (all over 1 yr) 180-201g
>> Female veileds (over 1.5 yr) 116-160g

>> WC Mellers (adults under 4ys) 270-420g
>> CB Rhampholeon brevs, average 2-6gs (incl gravid females)

I will get some new weights on the deremensis, quadricornis, jackson xants, and post them if you are interested. Some of the older male panthers haven't been weighed in several months, I'll check on those too.

The biggest thing we have seen so far in a panther was that wc Sirama/Ambilobe of Pams - it was 398 grams. Huge!

Hope this helps some,
