Is it legal to collect gold dust day geckos from Hawaii? I just wanted a trio for breeding; could I just get them and take them on the plane in a box?

Gold Dust Day Geckos (Phelsuma laticauda) are on the "A" list of Restricted animals in Hawaii, which means that it is illegal for a private person to possess (see HI AR 4-71-6).
However, I have found Hawaii quite willing to "export" their introduced herps in the past (They don't want nonnative species spreading on or between the islands, hence the restrictions), but the permit process can be lengthy, so start the process well before you trip.

Or call information for the Forestry Department office on the island you will be visiting.
A couple of other points to keep in mind:
If you get an export permit from HI, what are the import regulations for your state?
Will the airline and the security people at the airport let the reptile on the plane? In most cases, not in the cabin, and with the new high intensity radar, don't put them in your luggage either, which is also illegal by the way.
The USDA inspects ALL bags before they leave Hawaii, so keep your permits handy when you board.
