Is this frog courtship

markanthony Jan 12, 2004 12:57 PM

I have 4 dart frogs (dendrobated tinctorius), all approximately 10 months old, and as of yet unsexed.
I have provided them a coconut hut as a "honeymoon / loveshack." They had more or less ignored it until recently.
One of the bigger frogs has been climing all over another smaller one. "She" seems to folow "him" all over the place, and is always tapping him on the back. Quite often, especially when the tank is misted, they go into the hut for awhile.
I believe these frogs are too young to breed at this point. Would I be correct in assuming this? Is this perhaps some adolescent courtship? Has anyone had tincs breed before the first year?
One other question. I am concerned about the females fighting, now that they are approaching adulthood. What does this fighting look like? Is it premature to move the other two frogs- I don't want to move a potential mate just because it seems like my little fella is "hooking up" this early.
Sorry for all the questions. Couldn't find many answers in my books or on websites. Thanks for any help you might be able to offer.

I asked the same question a few months ago, and it sounds like the exact same situation. My what I now know is a male was getting “harassed” by the other frog. Presuming the worst, I asked here & on frognet about fighting. All responses were positive, and based on your post, it sounds like you’ve got a courting pair, too.

Unfortunately, it too my male a bit of time to figure out what this crazy girl frog wanted with him, and why she kept chasing him & touching him. Well, he got the picture about a month ago, and I pulled out some eggs. (I now have 6 tads in the water! Woo hoo!) But I did check a lot at first, only to be disappointed. Then, on a whim, a month later I checked the lid under their hut and voila! Eggies! It just takes a while for them to get the hang of it, I guess.

Just my observations, since i am a BIG TIME novice! I welcome any observations on my post...

PS. My husband refers to frog courtship as “grab-a$$”, since that’s what it looks like she’s trying to do.
