A few notes from 1/11/04

herpetological Jan 12, 2004 01:30 PM

Went out into the field for some pics and a day away from cleaning and the computer! LOL's! Anyway, temps in the morning were about 60 with a light wind. Humidity about 60%. Checked some old bee boxes and found about 50 Brown and Green Anoles. Plus about 30 Squirrel Tree Frogs and Green Tree Frogs. Next check some tin piles and found 3 small Red Rats about 18-24". Plus noted a few 5-line skinks and Ground Skinks. Next we check some pump stations on farms we are allowed to collect specimens on. Found a pair of Red Rats together under some drainage boards. About a 3-4' pair. It was now about mid-day so we went to collect Cuban Tree Frogs for an order.. We collected just over 200 in about 11/2 hours plus found a few Green Tree Frogs. We usually leave the GTF's since the Cubans have decimated their populations here in S. Fla. The wind started picking up badly so we went back to collecting board sets and tin piles. Noted several narrow mouth toads and Greenhouse frogs in a large board pile that was still damp. We found another 18" Red in this pile as well as a 5' female Red! Nice to see a big female! Plus 2 ribbon snakes in the same pile. Next we came across a black racer active along a canal bank. Noted several indo-pacific geckos in the pump stations. Noted a few Alligators and Redbelly turtles basking but, the weather was turning rough so we called it for the day. Total of 4-5 hours. Things were a bit hard to find since we've had some really cool weather and high winds.

I remember one time a friend and I looked through some old Bee boxes and we got swarmed by Honey Bee's pretty good, lots of fun. I wish flipping was productive down here in Houston right now. What are you collecting the Cuban Tree Frogs for ? Post some pics of the corns and gators....Scott

I'll get some pics up soon. I havent had time to download them to the computer. Yeah you have to watch the bees!! LOL's When it's cold it's ok but, as soon as hits above 55-60 degrees they're ready! I did find out that wasps operate at lower temps than the bees. Some have moved into the bee boxes that were empty. I found out quite quickly!! Lol's!

When was that? Was that when we were on 523 and you wanted to go check out all the hives and I refused to go since we were being dive bombed by bees? And they were passively aggressively stinging us (aka flying into us ) and then you got stung on the face? I could have told you that was going to happen...stupid. Andy

Yea Andy that was the incident I was rweferring to, althougt not near;y the worst one. The worst was when I rolled over an old septic tank and was swarmed and stung many, many times and I dropped my pinning stick so I had to go back and get it.
