Why, oh, why . . .

SouthernBel Jan 12, 2004 02:11 PM

Someone emailed me personally about my female ig, Tahra, to let me know he could tell from the picture that she is male. Tahra is absolutely female (she lays eggs!), but she truly does have some very masculine features. Basically, her head looks like a picture perfect male, but she does not have enlarged femoral pores, nor a bump near her vent (plus she lays eggs!). So why, oh, why does she look so much like a male?!

I'd still like to know how to get more than one picture inside one post, I have tried eveything my no-so-techy mind can think of!

You can tell she is female from the top view, look at that very gravid belly!

Your ig looks a lot like my female. I'll bet she's from Mexico; mexican igs tend to have a long snout, a large dewlap, long dorsal spines and a lot of green in their coloration. Males have much larger heads in proportion to their bodies and are slim-bodied, compared to females.

Your female actually looks very much like a female: heavy-bodied and a slim head. If you saw a male from above, the head would have an arrow-like shape, the shoulders would be broader and the belly part would be much slimmer. I'll try and get an overhead pic of our male and post it soon.

Congratulations, she is a very attractive ig and obviously well cared for!

It's hard to tell from the photo, but it doesn't appear that the joules are that developed (although the scales are large). I definitely don't see the male "brain bumps" behind the eyes either...
