Of all my Tortoises, i really enjoy my Russians. They are plucky little tortoises, and don't get too big. My first hatchling takes on one of my Leopards, and will actually grab food from his mouth.Which ever you decide to start with, please spend time studying it's requirements thoroughly. They make great pets if cared for as they should be. Good Luck! Jody P.S. I have Russians,Western Hermanns, Leopards, Pyxis Brygooi, and some 3 Toed Box Turtles- all with their own habitat specific pens.
Terrepene carolina triunguis- Hearing that people keep them reminds me of when I spent 3 months radio tracking them in the middle of nowhere, Missouri. I saw and recorded their movements thru their habitat consecutively for all of our twenty four hour days, repeatedly. This was during the summer, and let me tell you, it was hot. Quite often i would find them at least 6 inches into the leaf litter, and sometimes soil, in a form.
How deep do you keep the substrate in your turtles pens?
Just curious as to how well people are keeping their boxes.

My old Box Turtle "Spot" was my first non-aquatic turtle, and i have had her for nearly 15 years. I have at least 4-6 inches of cypress mulch in their indoor pen,and keep it very humid. They love to dig up night crawlers that have burrowed. In the summer they have a huge outdoor pen, well planted, and can burrow to their hearts content. And yes, they do "play" after it rains!
