Indentation on eggs

ragateway Jan 12, 2004 05:33 PM

Hi all:

Our Female Aeris just laid her eggs. This is her third clutch that she has laid. I tried to incubate them each time with no success. Each time the eggs get this indentation on the top that seems to increase each day. Here is what I have now.
I have a makeshift incubator of sorts. It consists of a clip light aimed at the eggs. The eggs are in a plastic container. The container has about a half inch of Perelite. I misted the Perelite fairly well. I have a digital thermometer in with the eggs (I am using the external mode that has a probe that is next to the eggs) It is reading 84 degrees. I also have a humidity gage in there as well. (it is the dial kind) and I am getting a reading of about 65%. I have the container covered with plastic wrap to increase humitity. Yet the eggs still seem to have a indentation. I am new at this and I was wondering what you all thought. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
Ralph

Honestly you need an incubator.
I don't think using the light really works.
Does the temp stay stedy?
It may be drying out the eggs.
The humidity in the container should be about 85.
You need to add a little more water and try this-
Take a paper towel peice about the size of the eggs and wet it.
Then squeeze out the extra water till it is just damp. Place it over the eggs and leave it there. Check on it tomorrow. One of mine that had a dent poped right out over night. Don't let the paper towel get dry if you leave it on longer then a day, you may just need tochange it and put a new damp one.
I hope that helps.
good luck.

Try reading Albey's Incubation Method and follow the instructions exactly. Well, as far as obtaining the proper perlite:water ratio. I was able to hatch eggs without using a humidity gauge or an incubator, and I also never had to re-mist the perlite.
