Questions about free roaming iguanas...

LLB Jan 12, 2004 05:41 PM

I am thinking about getting another Iguana soon but have a few questions about letting it run loose. I live in a house with 4 other guys as i go to college so it will be confined to 1 medium sized room about 14x14' in size. A guy i know owns a pet store and told me if a built a cage that he would give me an iguana when i purchase the lights and fixtures. since he doesnt want them going to a bad home you must get the correct lights first.

How old or large should they be before you let them loose?

Does your iguana typically leave the warmth of the heat lamp?

What i had in mind would be a corner unit that resembles a basic book case only instead of having 2 same sized shelves, it would have a slightly smaller top shelf like 1' in width and below that one that measures say 2' so he could climb easily. on the bottem id lay down a tray with cat litter for easy cleaning and just a bowl of food and water out on the floor next to the stand. The heat bulb is gonna be one of those Zoo med combination heat/UVB clipped however high it needs to be for a 90* basking spot. Any concerns with my setup?

btw the Iguana is probably 2' long so its more of a juvenile and while it could hide fairly easily.. it shouldnt be too difficult to keep track of in this room.

if you could post pics of your set up that would help, also, i feel ( just my opinion) if he/she is that small, it would be safer to let it in a cage when you are gone, especially when living with other people....just to be on the safe side...

Yeah it is a tad small which is why im a little concerned. I dont have the stand or cage built.. im still entertaining the idea of even owning one so i have come for some opinions to help in my decision. I am not someone who completely forget about an iguana running around the room, resulting in injury to the lizard so that is not something to worry about. I am mainly wondering how close to the heat/light source it would stay if i just let it go free.

I'm not an expert, but I don't think I would use cat litter for bedding. He mostlikely would eat it and get sick. I have used rabbit food for bedding, but the problem I had was it created dust and seemed to bother one of them. It didn't bother the other one though. If they eat it it won't make them sick. I've even read that you can moisten it and add it to their diet. I would check further before doing that though. I have a 26" and 34"lost part of tail once) Iguanas and I let them free roam in the bathroom (14'x 10')after their swim. I thought I had Iguana proofed it good, but I didn't. My little Ig found his way out and was lost in the house for 2 days. Luckily he wasn't hurt. Our doors have a lot of room under them and he got passed the barrier and under the door. You have to watch too if there isn't enough room for him to get under and he tries he could get hurt under the door so make sure it is securely blocked. I let my Igs free roam a little bit, but I am right there because nothing is Ig proofed yet. They can get behind the couch, entertainment center, recliner, etc.. I hope some of that helped. It's just some things that I have experienced with my Igs that I thought would be helpful. Good luck.

I had my iguana free roam since she was about 6 months. At 1st no matter how iguana proof the house was, or we thought it was, she always found a new place to hide and we had to spend hours looking for her. As for the lights, we had a place for her all set up but she wasn’t much keen on it. She kept on hanging out on this bookshelf we had on the other side of the room so we had to move the set up there. So basically she dictated to us as to what she wanted and where she wanted it. But just so you know she spend the 1st few month in the cage we had. Then what we started to do is leave the door open once we got home from work so she could run around but then she went back in again overnight before we let her run around free all together.

IMO i would not free roam an iguana that is only 2 ft long. it would be very easy to loose it in a room no matter what the size. i would deff wait until it is bigger. the other thing you have to ask your self is what are the other people in the room going to do when they see an iguana walking around the room.

my ig is about 3 years old and 3feet 10 inches i use to let him free roam bu tit got to hard to find him he would just find new places to hide as for the lights a couple of basking spots would be my choice with differnt temps on each for thermoregulation also they can choose wich one suits them right.now i have put him in a huge cage with my big 6 year old female but that was a bad choice i now have a gravid female!!!
