lighting/heating questions

indi Jan 12, 2004 08:10 PM

Hello, thank you all for the info about the cage size earlier. I am going to go for the 48x24x24. Now I am onto my next part, lighting and heating:

1. Will a basking lamp and ceramic heat thing (shrug) provide enough heat. Also, what bulb do you recommend for the basking light.

2. Should I go with a dual flourescent (sp?) fixture or should I go with a single. Again, bulb recommendation/s?

I remember reading a post about a week ago covering almost all aspects of the UVB bulbs, but I can't remember where it is, should have bookmarked it. But it had a huge test page with all the info they gathered from various testing. Thanks a bunch!!

You might need 2 bulbs to heat the cage.I use a powersun 100 watt flood and a 50 watt basking bulb. The 50 watt bulb makes his basking site 110 degrees at 9 inches or so.You can use either mercury vapor bulbs powersun/t-rex or you can use the fluorescent reptisun 5.0's.

Here is what I am a big fan of. For heating there is nothing better than a phillips halogen flood light like the ones in security lights. They last and make nice light. For a cage that size you will probably need at least a 90 watt halogen. Put this in a clamp lamp, you can buy both at Home Depot. While at the home depot buy a dual (T12 I will get it right this time) fluoro fixture. Put into that at least 1 zoomed reptisun 5.0 if you want to provide uvb the other can also be a zoomed or you can get a cheapo light from home depot. If you use a zoomed rember it must be within 12" of the dragon to be of any use. The site you spoke of is www.beautifuldragons.com
