a not hot that looks hot

i remember reading through a book some time ago and reading about a species of snake that looks like a kind of viper (it even has false pits) what is it called?

I don't know if this is what you're asking about, but there is a species from South America that goes by the common name of false lancehead. The species is Xenodon rhabdocephalus. A picture can be found on http://www.nhm.ac.uk/botany/lascuevas/Cuevasherps.html. I don't think this snake has pits, but it does look very much like what the name implies, save for the round pupils and more rounded head. It's fooling enough that if I ever came across it out in the jungle, I'd have to take a second look before I just reached down and grabbed it I hope this helped somewhat.

nope that wasnt it
this creature looks just like a viper its very dark colored, vertical slits for pupals, a fake heat pit, also has the same head shape of a viper but it isnt hot
