Beardie is very odd?

Slaytallica Jan 12, 2004 08:26 PM

I've had my new baby for 2 days, and oddly he lets me pick him up with no problem he even crawls up onto your finger.

I don't think hes nervous, but he just stopped eating cricks, he ate like an animal last night! He had a couple this morning.
He has ate twice

But weirdest of all - he just stares at stuff for hours, ill wait an hour and go check in my room and he'll be in the same stance, hes not active - at all! and today when I was giving him his first bath he kept closing his eyes / falling asleep..

is there a chance hes sick>

Hello,

Welcome to the forum, I don't want to rude with this but you should read up on beardie behavior. Most of the things you've posted are simple things known to beardies. There are lots of great people in the forum that have GREAT sites on beardies and their behavior. Most of your questions will most likely be answered by just reading some of those sites. Worked for me

Since you've just got your beardie, it will take some time for him/her to get use to his/her new home. It will take at least 3 weeks for him/her to adjust. Eating and inactiveness are associated with this time period.

Good luck and best wishes

Actully ive done TONS of research for 6 months every single day, no joke.. Its just its my first beardie, and I really dont want the lil guy to go on me ya know? thanks alot though

And one more thing - ive heard you can hold them right when you get them - AND you should wait a couple days.. What did you guys do / reccomend? mine almost crawls on me when im feeding cricks.

I think that it's best if you give them at least a week to settle in to their new surroundings. Try not to handle him during this period. Once he is comfortable and feeding normally, then go ahead and start handling him for short periods everyday.

On the other hand, since he's eating, doesn't seem very stressed, and doesn't have any problems with crawling up on Slaytallica's hand all by himself, I don't think handling him will hurt. Most baby beardies are very skittish when they're brought home for the first time, but this one seems very laid-back!

Those little behavior quirks are the sort of things they don't cover in books- and are just what forums are for.
At any rate, the proof is in the pudding. If the little guy is eating and growing and healthy, then whatever you're doing is probably ok.

I did TONS of reaserch everyday for 3 YEARS and still learn new things. I would recomend the 2 day wait.

The only weird thing now is, he just doesn't move.. I left this morning and came back - he was in the same exact spot, i would think he might run around a little

I thought forever he had a health problem and at first he did have coccidia but that has since been reduced to acceptable levels.

He still doesn't grow much at all but has no signs of illness I can see. He looks healthy, has great looking poo (that just doesn't sound right), eats a decent amount, has good color with no lines on his underside. But he just sits there and stares at things.

He seems mentally "special". The other day, after reguarly gulping up a couple moths and had been for a couple of weeks, he decided this time he would actually head bob at the moth. Did his head bobbing until I took the moth out. Next day gobbled up a moth without hesitation.

Sometimes he will not eat a worm until I bump it on his nose two or three times. Once he comes out of his "trance" he grabs it real quick!! The next worm is the same way. Other days he will just go nuts after the first one and every one thereafter.

He is the cutest little guy though and so sweet. I got him at a pet shop which I know I shouldn't have done now but the person that takes care of the reptiles there does a top notch job. Anyway, I don't know if she has a say in choosing the supplier so I'm racking it up as an inbred. It's sad but I love him anyway.

So maybe you got a "special" one too !
