hi i'm new

fionap Jan 12, 2004 09:03 PM

i'm not sure if my iguana is a boy or girl so i'll say him
when i acquired him he was in a 10 gallon aquarium which was way to small so we built him a cage 6X6X3 and he totally hated it he refused to eat/drink/thrive it had a heat rock 2 lights and lots of plants when i came to the conclusion that he was not going to accept the new enclosure (he lost so much weight and just lay on the bottom with his face down he had given up) we bought him a 35 gallon tank he proceded to smash his face on it until he knocked off his little horns
we built him a shelf 3X5 with an upper basking area complete with soft blanket
wow
my question is what kind of lights you recommend both fixtures are the bulb type
both of his back legs have muscle atrophy and one was broken (when he was the pet in a kindergarten class!) it never healed properly but he is agile and the legs seem to be getting better with his daily bath and also being able to move around freely
he eats iguana pellets and any greens i give him (hates fruit)
i never thought i would become so attached but i truly adore him
any input would be appreciated
go easy on me i'm trying to learn

first lose the heat rock, they need uvb from an iguana light or one of those long bulbs and he will need an enclosure that is high. 3 feet is probably to short if that is the height

if you could post some pics of his enclosure, and of your ig it would help everyone give you better advice...

he isn't in an enclosure he's free to come and go as he likes his area is not blocked in and its about 6 ft long with 2 different levels with drift wood for climbing i will get him new bulbs tomorrow

First get rid of the heat rock they do no good to iguanas they can cause burns and just be nasty. you also need to get the proper lights. i like ceramic heat emmitters. and you need to get either an Iguana light or a reptisun 5.0 these will fight against MBD. i would also lose the iguana peletts. if contain any animal protien than it can cause seriuos damage to the iguana. and he could end up getting kidney disease which can and in most causes does kill them. also what kind of greens are you feeding it? they VARIETY!!! with the back legs has he been to a vet?? if not i would bring him that way the vet can look him over and he can tell you if the leg is healing right.

If you have any other question just ask
