where to find mortar mixing tubs

MikeT Jan 12, 2004 09:30 PM

Lots of people have used the rectangular mortar mixing tubs to raise their rats and I'm wondering if anyone can tell me where to find them in Michigan.
Thanks,
Mike

Home Depot, prob can get them at other hardware stores.

Home Depot is where I got mine for my mice, it really works well too. They have a Home Depot in traverse City MI, I dont know where else.

Hope that helps.

I believe that I have seen posts where people used them. There are two sizes of the mixing tubs, the small ones which are about 28" long 19" wide and 6" deep. I think I have read about people using this size for their rats at about a 1:3 ratio, but I could be wrong. And then there is a bigger tub that would be more than enough room for rats. The smaller one is about 5 or 6 dollars and the larger one is about 11 I think.

It is really easy to make a lid for these too, get some 1/4" screen for mice and I think 1/2" for rats and make a frame of 1" by 1" wood and staple the screen to the fame and just sit it on top of the cage. For my mice I do not weight it down, but it may be necessary for rats to weight it down.

I put a water bottle thorough the screen and they always have fresh water and I put food in a cup upside-down on top of the screen and they just eat from that.

I also like to eat coconuts and every time I get one I use the new shell as a hide until it gets dirty, that would be to small for rats though.

Hopefully someone will correct me if something I have said is wrong so you don’t do something wrong.

hope some of this helps
