Green Anole eating habits

ssicotte Jun 05, 2003 02:55 PM

Knowing that I should switch around my anole's diet, I bought mealworms to suppliment his diet. But, ever since I have started feeding him mealworms he refuses to eat crikets. For the last 4 days I have not given him any worms to force him to eat the crikets but it did not work. I dont know what to do, I did not anoles were so stubborn. What should I do, should I keep at what I am doing or try somthing eles. Thank You

This is a normal behavior. When an Anole is fed one thing for a long time, and then spontaneously given something different, he/she may not want to switch back. If you ate brownies for 6 months and then were given apples for a day or two, would you go back to brownies? Odds are that you wouldn't.

The best thing is to vary the diet from the start. And it helps to give different things all of the time, as opposed to rotating single types.

A few pages on my guide that may help include my Feeding page, and my Fussy eaters section.

Well When I got my two anoles, male and female. I started off with a feast of mealies. They each took4 and were happy. Ever since the male will have almost nothing to do with the mealies and the female only want mealies. I heavily dust the worms to keep them healthy because she has been laying some eggs. They each have their preferences and about once a week will try something new. But i guess it all depends on they preference of the animal because my male is strictly crickets.
Hope that helped somewhat.
just make sure you dust the mealies.

HMMMmm... Just crickets and mealies.. is not a suitable diet for these anoles... Ever think of going out side ( yes kids outside) and catch bugs? at night leave the porch light on!!! catch moths and beetles! what about seeping a net( butterfly or birdnet) through your grass or even a field! Wild food is much more nutritional then crickets and mealies.. some mealies are given hormones to make them grow and other chemicals so keep that in mind! Its not hard to supply your anoles with wild caught bugs. I spend about 30 mins outside sweeping my yard and some long grass in a field next to me ( and sneeking into peoples yards) to get bugs for my babys ( 4 knight anoles) and they have crickets if the want them they rather have the bugs I catch then the crickets but they still like those too. Good luck and happy hunting ( bugs are everywhere, your anoles will love you for it)
