HELP ASAP, what is in my frog enclosure?

fairyfrog20 Jan 12, 2004 11:37 PM

I noticed tiny white bugs in my frog inclosure. The first I noticed looked like little white inchworm insects, they were few and far between and seemed to disappear. Now I have noticed tiny white bugs that look a lot like mites. I have had this enclosure set up for 6 months with NO previous problems. I have soil and live plants for substrate. These bugs seem to get into the water bowl. I know I need to sanitize the aquarium (tomorrow)-but what type of bugs are these and what type of medicine/spray would get rid of them? HELP ASAP
Thank you to anyone who reads this and may be able to help me out!

how small are they?? if they are 1mm-2mm, they are probably collembolas/springtails. they feed of decaying plant material, substrate, and frogs faeces. they will not harm your frog. when they fall in the water do they float?

Ya, they are tiny. They do float too. They just scurry around on top of the water. Also I've seen them actually on my frogs. Is that something to worry about? Maybe parasitic?? Hopefully cleaning out the terrarium and changing out the soil will take care of it. Do you think I should do anything else? How do I avoid this after I set it all back up? Thank you so much for your help ~ by the way!

they are not parasitic. you will not be able to get rid of them, they live in the wood. there is no point in cleaning the enclosure, they will not harm your frogs. they sometimes walk over my frogs aswell, it doesn't harm them. there is nothing to worry about

I've got the same things in my croc skink's cage. I was pretty sure they weren't mites but now I know!
