My new adopted beardie

dasnakeguy Jan 13, 2004 12:42 AM

Here's some pictures of my new adopted beardie. I got him from a friend of a friends who no longer had the time for him. He's a little jumpy and nervous so I assume he wasn't handled much. Hopefully with regular handling he'll calm down for me. Few questions though. His longest toes on both of his back legs seem kinked or double jointed looking. Is this normal because my younger dragon's toes are straight. Also I picked him up Sunday night and tonight he threw up. He threw up undigested meal worms and crickets. Could he just have been nervous about the move and change of environment? Thank you for any input.

One more. Sorry I haven't learned how to post multiple pictures yet.

I would definitely take a stool sample to the vet....could be parasites, but what are his cage temps.....beardies need to be warm to digest.....80 cool side, 90-95 warm side and a basking area with several temp choices from 100-108 or so. Often a dragon throwing up undigested food is because their temps aren't high enough.

I believe he didn't have time to digest. I had to pick him up in the afternoon and didn't get a heat lamp on him for a few hours. I tried to keep him warm until I got home but I think he just ate before I picked him up. Today he seems fine. He ate a whole bunch of greens and some pellets. I'll continue to monitor him though. Thank you all for the advice.

Hi! Congratulations on your new adopted beardie!

The toes look fine to me, although it was a bit difficult to tell from the pictures. They may look strange, but that's the way the are!

About the throwing up: I've personally not heard of beardies throwing up from stress, but I can't tell you for sure that they don't. Did he have enough time to bask after he ate those crickets that came up? And was the basking temperature high enough (around 105F)? I think most likely he somehow didn't get a chance to digest the crickets and mealworms properly. Anyway, now that he's thrown up there's not much to do about it. Make sure you keep him hydrated though. Throwing up could dehydrate a beardie if you're not careful! Give him a soak, og at least mist him, and get him to drink some water.

Since he threw up two days in a row you should take him to a vet and have him checked out. He looks rather skinny but since you just got him he may or may not have been taken care of very well and I think that the best thing to do is to let a vet decide what is causing this. Being stressed would not cause him to vomit. Plus the vet can give him a shot to rehydrate him if necessary, they had to do this to one of mine when he got very, very sick because soaking him and getting him to drink was not helping. I would seriously consider a vet visit and it will put your mind at ease. You don't want this to progress and cause him more discomfort.

He's pretty thin looking from the pics, and if he's been throwing up there's a decent sign that he may be having problems with coccidia or other internal parasites, better get him to a vet quick to be sure what's going on.

Make sure to really hydrate him, vomiting is a quick way to dehydration.

Ok, I have a similar problem.

We are the proud owners of a 3-4 year old male. He is thicker than yours and we are it's 3rd ownere in 3 months. I gues he was eating well at his last home, would eat 15 superworms a day, lettuce and drink water. They commonly fed him by hand and always had him out.

We upgraded his enclusure from a 10 gal (he's 20 inch approx) to a 55 gal 48X12X20. He seems to get really stressed wehn going in there. Grabs the cage top and resists. We've used filtered sand ( I filtered it myself) as a substrate. Proper temp gradient for the first time for 2 months (but he was eating better with previous owners). More green selection from us including dnadelions. He's eaten only 3 superworms since ariving with us and none since we have moved him to new enclusure. He hates going in there too although it is much better than his last.

A couple nights ago when we were first puting him in the enclosure he threw up while resisting ( I was being gentle).

Any thoughts or comments?
