Use peat moss...cheaper and that fluker stuff is bad for bacteria for some reason...I would never use any commercial substrates...

Just look at that calci-sand stuff..."and if your reptile eats it, it'll be good for him!" I would love to meet the inventor of that stuff and tell him to swallow a handful and ask him how he feels an hour later. Sand is sand. Moss is moss. Why pay more for something with a well-known brand name on it?

Sorry I sort of dropped the pygmy leaf cham thread below - we are so chatty I used Eco-earth for them, my anoles and my geckos. The leaf chams spend very little time on the substrate and if you keep it only moderately damp (this will also depend if you keep your plants in pots or plant directly) it will minimize any mold problems. Frankly, I have found the eco-earth to be extremely mold resistant. I had forgotten about a bucket of it -still VERY wet - for months! When I found it, it was still damp with absolutely no growth or smell.

A not about peat moss: it is a non-renewable resource (in OUR lifetime) and the coco-fiber products are a much more ecologically- friendly choice.

Is 'eco-earth' a coco-fiber product? I've found 'bricks' of coco-fiber (just add water) at my local 99 cent store.
There's a chain locally in So Cal of 99 cent stores. Can't remember the name, but they have some good 'herp' related products:
Instant mashed potato (for fruit fly culturing)
baker's yeast (ff culture)
various disposable 'tupperware' products
coco-fiber bricks
potting soil
small plants
I'm sure there's more, just hasn't crossed my mind...

yup - it is. I think bed-a-beast, jungle earth are some others. I got a 3-pack of eco-earth for $4. If you buy it at a PetCo-type store it's almost that much/brick! If the coco-fiber at the store is not treated then - go for it. If it's made for plants, as opposed to herps, you may want to be sure that it is not treated in any way, which it may well be (pesticides, fungicides, etc.)

We have those store, too but I am so infrequently at a mall (I am in rural NH) that I never think to go to one - but maybe my next "mall" trek I will check one out!

i've kept dart frogs on it for five years...never a problem...the original 5 dart frogs are still hopping around catching fruitflies and pinheads

haha! but didn't you mean redundant? Oxymoron is contradictory and I ASSUME you meant that all of NH is rural (which it isn't but much of it is - we are the second most forested state!)

anyway, you are probably just jealous that when I look out my window I am looking at a river, wildlife, trees and other wonderful nature!

just teasing

Truly. Wish I could look out my window at such natural splendor.
I'm stuck in boring old So Cal. Can't even keep my chameleons all day during winter. Only 6 or eight hours a day. And cold! Dropped to almost 45 last night. BRRRR!!! (hehehe)

uh, cold you say?? it is -10 degrees, yes, that IS a minus sign! Last night with the windchill it got to -50 BELOW zero last night in some parts of the state - not where I am, we were at a balmy -25 below 0 - LOL!!!! Now, this truly is not typical even for here. it has been an extremely cold winter so far and -thank goodness no power outages (yet). I don;t know how I woul dkeep everyone warm! I'd have to get Luna, the J sisters, Gaia, Tia and the felines all cuddled into bed to stay warm! haha!

but, yes, it is very pretty here

I remember one time, it was really cold here in NY and my heather pad for my tortoises aren't working so I cuddled them all in my bed so they get warm. Good thing they didn't pooped.
