Kingsnake eating another snake? (request)

Antegy Jan 13, 2004 10:33 AM

Hello all,

I have a young black desert kingsnake who is absolutely healthy, lively (there's an understatement!), and friendly. I have had her for about four months now, and she eagerly eats pink mice every Sunday evening. So, as far as I can tell, all seems to be going quite well.

I know that kingsnakes eat other snakes; which is what has lent them their name. I have never seen this, and I want to see this happen - my curiosity abounds, though I don't want to feed my little girl any snakes. I was hoping that someone could point me in the direction online somewhere that I may find photos, or even better, movie clips that show the event transpire.

If you could please post a link(s) that you know of I would very much appreciate it, as it would satisfy my curiosity while allowing me to forego the sacrifice of one snake to another.

Thanks in advace,
- Mark

I'm glad to be able to see it in pictures without having to bear live witness to the act. For some reason it disturbs me - I think it bears just a little too much semblance to cannibalism to me. Even still, I think to fully satisfy my curiosity I'm going to look around a bit longer to see if I can find a video clip somewhere (that should put an end to it for me!).

Thanks for the speedy reply,
- Mark

It doesnt just resemble cannibalism it is cannibalism. As far as vid clips Im sure there is something around but I havent looked.

I have always regarded cannibalism as feeding on members of your own species. None of those pictures showed that. If feeding on closely related animals is considered cannibalism, then what about humans that have hunted and fed on chimpanzees? They are certainly more closely related than a kingsnake and a rattlesnake.

Websters defines Cannibal as one that eats the flesh of it's own kind. So I guess it depends on how you define "kind".

I'll try to catch the show, though I hardly ever watch TV at all (I can't stand television), I'll try to make an exception this time.

Thanks,
- Mark
