What kind of substrate is best?

atistaldi Jan 13, 2004 11:04 AM

I've had aspen, I've had that coconut fiber stuff. Seems to me both these substrates can be partially swallowed by my ball pythons with there meal. I would like something sanitary and inexpensive to put in the bottom of my tubs. I'm not really wanting newspaper or astroterf, but if I can't find anything safe for my balls I'll have to. If anyone can suggest something, please do. I've seen people use that paper recycled stuff, how's that work?

Any loose substrate has the potential to be swallowed with a meal. Your ball pythons will need some humidity. Recycled paper products can desiccate the environment to much. Newspaper is inexpensive and clean and easy to dispose of. I would suggest cypress mulch. It is easy to spot clean and will maintain humidity levels when moistened. I would also feed in a separate tub to avoid the possibility of ingesting any substrate.
