spotted python shedding question....

delacrooshweez Jan 13, 2004 02:18 PM

i have a baby spotted python that i got about a month and a half ago and it hasnt eaten since..he is about 14 inches in length...i am still new to snakes and i'm wondering if it is normal for a snake to shed if it hasnt eaten in that period of time...also, my snake started to shed, or so i thought, because he kept opening his mouth and part of the skin on the bottom of his mouth came off but didnt shed the rest of his skin...now he is beginning to look all wrinkly...will he shed the rest of his skin or is he having trouble doing so?...i am just waiting to see if he will do it on his own but should i take any action to help?... i am going to try and feed him a lizard scented pinky after he fully sheds or should i try to feed him now at his shedding stage??...there is also a clicking sound i hear that he makes..is this normal??....any help would be appreciated.....im still learning about my snake so sorry for all the questions....i just want to make sure he is healthy..thanks

Have you tried soaking him for half an hour or so in warm
water? That was recommended to me once in a similar situation,
and it seemed to help. (Don't put his head under water, of
course.)

Mine exhibited a clicking sound at the same time, too, and a
couple vets have told me that it is normal in this circumstance.

Mine often soak voluntarily when shedding, so that the skin
ends up coming off in one damp lump.

I have never had a problem with spotted pythons shedding. However, i have soaked other snakes before in order to help them along a bit. Seems to work well. I use a rubbermaid filled to about half the snake's girth, in slightly warm water.

I don't know about that clicking sound you're hearing though.. Possible RI?

Try the scented pinky, and also try to leave the snake alone for a while. Most neonates think they are some sort of delicacy to any large mammal, and get nervous very easily.
