Gharial question

caiman87 Jan 13, 2004 02:56 PM

I was surfing the Web, look up info about gharials when I came upon a site which said they could do little to hurt you for their size and that they make "great pets". To me that sounded absurd, but wanted to know what you all thought. I didn't think you could buy one at all because of their rarity.

I was surfing the Web, look up info about gharials when I came upon a site which said they could do little to hurt you for their size Thats true but I would still hate to be bitten. A big one "might" be able to kill a man although I do not know of any case were this has happened.
and that they make "great pets". I have never kept one and so can say nothing as to temperment but the huge adult size certainly keeps them from being a "great pet" regardless of temperment.
I think it I didn't think you could buy one at all because of their rarity thats correct. You can't.

I worked with the large male gharial at Frankfurt Zoo in the early 70s. This large male has been very docile, but of course:
Large crocodilians are always able to hurt or may be kill you.
