Ideal water level relative to substrate

MarkF Jan 13, 2004 02:59 PM

I'm setting up my Viv, and I will have a 5.5" water feature with the land mass sitting on a platform.

What is the ideal reltivity of water to the land mass (substrate)? I can have the water level below the start of the land mass, or I can overlap it a bit. Which should it be?

It depends on what type of dirt, if any, you are using. It may soak up all the water, and then make it too wet for some plants.

I'm using the recipe I found around here.

Fir bark, Fine Fern, sphangum moss, peat moss and some fine charcol. This is on top of a some large charcol, on screen on eggcrate.

It depends on how wet you want it to get. If it is soaking wet some plants may not grow or rot out over time. I have not used dirt at all but in my most recent tank and a older one. So maybe some others have some thoughts.
