General rule is 10 gallons per inch of turtle plus 15 gallons. So if you turtle is 4 inches 55 gallons needed. But males tend to get 9 to 10 inches so a hundred gallon tank would be good. Just so you know you measure front to back of it shell. Take care Shannon
I think 55 is too small for an adult.
a minimum size is i think, 6 square feet. So a standard 90 gallon which is 4 feet be 18 inches would be a minimum adequate size.
a standard 100 gallon is 5 feet by 18 inches (better) and ther eis a 120 gallon model made by some companies which is 5 feet by 2 feet.
A 125 is about 6 feet by 18 inches (my preffered minimum size)
Keep in mind that large plastic pre formed ponds and metal and plastic stock tanks can be had for much les smoney than glass tanks and many come in quite large sizes.
The depth is less of a consideration than the total surface area.
Glad to hear you plan to upgrade. Despite what pet stoes and some web sites may tell you I really think that 20 gallon for a turtle of more than 4 inches borders on animal creulty.
